Kaipara District Council calls for Citizens Awards nominations, announces inaugural community award
Nominations have opened for a new set of awards that Kaipara District Council has announced to acknowledge the work of individuals and organisations who protect and enhance the District’s unique environment.
It is the first year these awards have run, with five categories to enter. They are; Environmental Action in the Community, Environmental Action in Education, Environmental Action in Business/Industry, Environmental Youth Leadership, and Kaitiakitanga.
Jenny Rooney, Funding Co-ordinator for Kaipara District Council says KDC wants to recognise individuals and organisations who are making significant contributions to ensuring our beautiful natural environment thrives in the Kaipara District.
“Perhaps you know someone who is driving learning and action to bring about change on environmental issues, or a business which demonstrates a notable contribution to the sustainable development of natural resources in the Kaipara. We want to hear about them,” says Ms Rooney.
All Environmental Awards nomination categories and further details can be found at kaipara.govt.nz/funding
KDC is also calling for Citizens Awards nominations. These are awarded annually, to recognise substantial service, usually of a voluntary nature or beyond normal employment, benefiting Kaipara and its people. Applications will be assessed on their personal leadership, inspiration, sacrifice or devotion to a cause or whether they made a significant contribution to the well‑being of the Kaipara District and its citizens. Generally, the nominees work would be predominantly voluntary, but if they have been paid for services they are still eligible to receive an award.
Previous winners have included Christine Bygrave, Terri Donaldson, John Phillis, and Sally Parkinson.
It is not necessary to ask the person or organisation if they are happy to be nominated. If a nomination is successful, permission will be obtained from the intended recipient before any announcement is made to the public. Nominations for both the Environmental Awards and the Citizens Awards run until 31 May 2020, with the winners announced in July.
