Recycling

In February 2024 the government standardised kerbside recycling nationwide. Simplifying and standardising what can be recycled to make it easier for you to put the right items in the right bin, no matter where you are.

Read more about the changes to standardise household recycling on the Ministry for the Environment website.

What types of products can be recycled?

The only materials now accepted in council kerbside recycling bags are:

  • Plastic bottles, trays and containers marked with recycling symbols 1, 2 or 5 ONLY
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Paper and cardboard (including pizza boxes with food scraps removed)
  • Aluminium and steel tins and cans

Recycling must be clean. No lids, caps or bottle tops can be placed in a yellow recycling bag for kerbside collection. Yellow recycling bags cost $1.80 and can be purchased throughout the district from most supermarkets and council offices.

Plastic tank recycling

Got a large plastic tank that's no longer serviceable? Did you know that you can now recycle them?

There is a now a recycling service being offered by Vision Plastics for tanks that have reached the end of their life, saving them from being buried, burned or dumped in landfill.  This business can also take rotationally moulded products such as mussel floats, kayaks and troughs to name a few.

This is a new service and one that needs to be utilised so please check out their website.
