What is Council doing to improve Dargaville's water supply?
We are acutely aware that water supply for Dargaville is a real challenge during the summer months and there needs to be a solution to increase the security of Dargaville’s water supply.
Under the previous Three Waters legislative direction, Council didn’t have to budget for these costs. Following disestablishment of the Three Waters programme in December 2023, we brought investigations to improve Dargaville’s water supply back inhouse. Council committed in the Long Term Plan 2024 – 2027 to invest in improving water supply and increase capacity through consent renewal, alternative water sources and storage solutions. We investigated two options – either connecting to the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust or upgrading the Waiatua Dam. Estimates for each of these options were between $16 and $17 million.
On 1 April 2025, the Minister for Regional Development Hon Shane Jones announced a deal with the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust to build and operate a new 22km pipeline from its Te Waihekeora reservoir at Redhill to Dargaville. The deal will provide an opportunity for Council to access a more consistent and reliable water supply without the associated infrastructure costs. Read more about the announcement.
Can we put a tank on our property?
Currently our residential rules require a connection to the council town water supply unless otherwise not available. However, you are permitted to install a water tank on your property to collect rainwater and greywater to use for watering your garden etc.
In urban areas, if want to install a rainwater system for more than garden use, please contact the Council on 0800 727 059 and discuss your specific requirements. Find out more about collecting and using rainwater.
Water suppliers for households on tanks
Households with tank supply are responsible for managing and paying for their own water. (Town supply customers pay for water through rates).
There are a number of water suppliers in Kaipara and neighbouring regions who can supply water to residents on private water supply. You can find a supplier via this directory.
Help with urgent water costs
Work and Income NZ may be able to help with water tank refill costs. Income and asset limits apply and depending on your circumstances, you may have to pay the money back. Find out more on the Work and Income NZ website.
