Food Business Levy
Central government introduced the Food Business Levy in 2024. Food businesses were invited to give feedback via a consultation process from 2 February to 15 March 2024.
The levy is an annual charge which came into effect on 1 July 2025. It applies to all food businesses.
As your Registration Authority (your local council) we will:
- Collect the levy on behalf of the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) Food Business Levy FAQs
- Transfer the levy to MPI
If you do not pay the levy on time, we will forward your debt to the MPI. The MPI may also apply penalties including interest charges.
How we charge the Food Business Levy
From 1 July 2025, we commenced charging the Food Business Levy every year in July. The levy applies every year regardless of your registration renewal date. The levy is phased in over the next three years.
