Lost your Dog? The best way to find a lost dog is by ensuring it is registered. That way if it wanders, escapes or gets lost, someone can identify it and you can be contacted.
Lost Pet Finders provides a free online resource for anyone who has lost a pet along with advice and a mass notification service.
SPCA list every incoming stray animal on www.lostpet.co.nz, which is a national database where pet owners can check the ‘found’ listings and/or create a ‘lost’ listing for their lost post.
You may also want to contact neighbours and post photographs and descriptions on local notice boards..

Strays and Impounding
Owners are legally responsible for keeping their dog under control at all times. Failure to do so is an offence under Section 53 of the Dog Control Act with a fine of up to $3,000 or an infringement fee as per our Fees and Charges.
Any dog found at large can be impounded at the owner's expense. If the dog is identifiable, the owner will be notified by telephone or written notice. Dogs that are unclaimed after seven days become the property of Kaipara District Council and they can be adopted or euthanised.
Fees
No dog will be released until all costs have been paid. Failure to claim an impounded dog does not relieve the owner from costs.
