When is my rubbish collected?
Missed collection?
Report your missed collection directly to the rubbish company.
- Kerbside collection bags – Kaipara Refuse
- Wheelie bin – call your provider, Kaipara Refuse or Northland Waste .
Kerbside rubbish collection
Weekly kerbside collection of rubbish (blue bags) and recycling (yellow bags) is available to many Kaipara District residents. Look up your kerbside collection day.
Collections are user pays and you can buy Kaipara Refuse bags from your local supermarket, petrol station, dairy or KDC offices.
- ONLY official pre-paid blue bags for rubbish and official pre-paid yellow bags for recycling will be collected
- Make sure your rubbish bags are kerbside by 8:00 am
- Other rubbish (e.g. black bags) is considered 'Illegal Dumping'
- It is a KDC by-law that the pre-paid blue rubbish bags may be placed kerbside ONLY on rubbish collection days
Kerbsite collection is provided by one privately operated company, Kaipara Refuse. Instead of rubbish bags, you can pay for a wheelie bin directly with either Kaipara Refuse or Northland Waste, depending on your location.
Kerbside recycling collection
Yellow recycling bags are available from supermarkets, dairies, petrol stations and council offices. Look up your kerbside collection day.
What can go in my recycling bag?
Please give your recycling a rinse before bagging it. You can put the following in your yellow recycling bag:
✅ Plastic bottles, trays and containers #1, #2 and #5
✅ Paper and cardboard (incl clean pizza boxes with food scraps removed)
✅ Glass bottles and jars
✅ Aluminium and steel tins and cans
Do not put the following in your yellow recycling bag:
❌ Soft plastics
❌ Lids and caps
❌ Food waste
❌ Broken glass
❌ Anything dirty or contaminated

Transfer stations and recycling facilities
There are two transfer stations in the district for public use – they accept waste, recycling and e-waste.
Check opening hours and what waste is accepted at the transfer stations in Hakaru and Dargaville.
Rural collection points
Some rural residents need to leave prepaid bags at approved collection points because the waste collectors do not collect from their road.
Pre-paid rubbish bags can only be left at an approved collection point.
Find your closest approved collection point.
The maximum weight of prepaid bags is 10kg. Rubbish bags should not contain more than 20% recyclables, 20% food waste and no greenwaste.
Recycling other items
Recycling can be taken to the Dargaville Resource & Recovery Park and Hakaru Re:Sort during opening hours. Please refer to the websites for more information on recycling and disposal guidelines.

Plastic tank recycling
Got a large plastic tank that's no longer serviceable? There is a now a recycling service being offered by Vision Plastics for tanks that have reached the end of their life, saving them from being buried, burned or dumped in landfill. This business can also take rotationally moulded products such as mussel floats, kayaks and troughs to name a few.
E-waste
Help divert electronic waste from landfill by recycling your TV, computers, washing machines – almost anything with a plug! Check with our Dargaville and Hakaru transfer stations if they will take your specific e-waste. Or find out more about e-cycle.

In February 2024 the government standardised kerbside recycling nationwide. Simplifying and standardising what can be recycled to make it easier for you to put the right items in the right bin, no matter where you are.
