Register in person:
Dog registration forms are available at council offices. Your dog benefits by being readily identifiable and has a far greater chance of being returned home if it becomes lost or is involved in an accident, and the community benefits from us having a complete register of all dogs as well as a better idea of how best its services might be provided.
Your dog registration fees help to make better provision for the care and control of dogs throughout our district and cover the wide range of dog services we provide. This includes:
- Dog management across the whole district
- Regular patrols undertaken by our animal management officers, and attending to complaints and incidents.
- Law enforcement and prosecution where necessary including enforcement of the Dog Control Act and other bylaws. Sometimes we need to impound dangerous and menacing dogs and prosecute their owners.
- Covering the costs of our shelter to house dogs when they are picked up (including the associated costs of food). Sometimes we are also required to provide emergency veterinary services.
- Monitoring the district for customer complaints, including 24 hour/7 days a week service too.
We also provide education programmes around the district, with our animal management officers available to attend dog obedience clubs and schools to educate dog owners about the responsibilities of looking after an animal.
