Wood Street and surrounds revitalisation and stormwater

We have lift off! We started construction of the permanent upgrade of Wood Street and surrounds from Monday 31 March 2025.

The work includes upgrading the stormwater network as well as constructing the permanent design for Wood Street, the old fire station site and the back carparking area and playground (behind Gringas). Our contractors for this project are HEB Construction.

August 2025

Stage One of the works have been completed and HEB Construction are close to completing Stage Two.

On Wood Street

Yes, there are cones in place to manage traffic and keep the crew and public safe, but Wood Street is still open! The HEB construction crew is making great progress, working down from the Molesworth Drive end toward Four Square, Allied Service Station, and the Community Op Shop.

If you've been through Wood Street lately, you’ll have seen the new streetscape taking shape with fresh kerbing and improved accessways near Four Square and Allied Service Station. You can still visit these businesses and use the Four Square carpark but just be mindful that parking on Wood Street might be limited. If possible, please use our brand new back carpark area instead – there’s more than 76 new parks, tons of space!

From Thursday 14 August

We will have finished the footpath works on the northern side of Wood St between Molesworth Drive and Fagan Place and HEB will shift to the southern side of Wood Street between Molesworth Drive and Fagan Place including the section outside Mean BRGR, Pasta e Basta, Mangawhai Fishing and Tackle and Super Liquor.

From the week starting Monday 25 August

HEB will begin working behind Gringas and in front of the Medical Centre on Fagan Place. The next stage of the car park in the old fire station site as well as the car park behind Wood Street (next to the Senior Citizens Hall) will be open, meaning over 100 parking spaces are available to the community. This car park area includes mobility parking, new parent parking and parking for trailers. The new car park can be accessed from Fagan Place (after the Senior Citizens Hall) and from the intersection of Ellen Street and Wood Street (next to Stingray Matts).

From the week starting Monday 1 September

We will begin working on both sides of Wood Street between Fagan Place and Ellen Street, from the pharmacy to Wood Street Pizzeria and from No Limits to Stingray Matts.

When we are working on the southern side of Wood Street

We will be working between 7.00am and 5.00pm (Monday to Friday) to improve the footpath and accessways and install new kerb and channel along the southern side of Wood Street from Molesworth Drive to Fagan Place including outside Mean BRGR, Pasta e Basta, Mangawhai Fishing and Tackle and Super Liquor.

Wood Street will stay open between Molesworth Drive and Fagan Place. It will still be possible to access the Four Square carpark and the Allied service station will be operating as normal.

There may be parking restrictions on Wood Street so please plan ahead and use Fagan Place or the roundabout in Ellen Street to access the new car park behind Wood Street. Pedestrian access will be maintained to affected businesses at all times.

Work on this stage will take approximately six weeks to complete. All dates are weather dependent and subject to change.

When we are working behind Gringas and in front of the medical centre

We will be working between 7.00am and 5.00pm (Monday to Friday) to install the new playground. During this time, it will not be possible to park between Gringas and the medical centre. Parking for the medical centre including mobility parking is available in the new car park.

When we are working between Fagan Place and Ellen Street

We will be working between 7.00am and 5.00pm (Monday to Friday) installing new carparking and roadway, new boardwalks and seating areas.

Wood Street will be open, but vehicles won’t be able access this section of Wood Street– from the Pharmacy/No Limits to Wood Street Pizzeria/ Stingray Matt’s. Pedestrian access to Wood Street shops and businesses will always be open and signage to guide you around the area will be in place. Fagan Place will be one-way. To exit the Wood Street area please use the new car park behind Wood Street and exit at the intersection of Wood Street and Ellen Street via the old fire station site.

Temporary mobility parking will be available outside the pharmacy. Additional mobility parking is available in the car park behind Wood Street. Fencing around the work area will be in place and traffic management will be on site to help you move safely around the Wood Street area. Please ask our team if you are unsure.

Work on this stage and the playground will be completed by early November. All dates are weather dependent and subject to change.

Night works will mean more noise than usual. We're really sorry for any disruption and appreciate your patience while we get the job done.

Background

In September 2019 the Mangawhai Business Association approached Kaipara District Council, to address issues relating to high levels of congestion, traffic issues, and pedestrian safety around Wood Street.

Since then, the Council has been collaborating with the Mangawhai Business Association and community, testing layout and design to create a vibrant, unique, warm and people-friendly place. The current interim design has been in place since December 2020. Using temporary materials has allowed features to be tweaked and changed throughout the testing period, informed by community and business feedback, vehicle data, and regular monitoring.

The project team have continued to meet with individual landowners, business operators, impacted residents and the Mangawhai Business Association to clarify the final technical layout, identify public and private boundary lines and make sure that due consideration is given to concerns or opportunities presented such as upgrading of premises/loading zones/deliveries.
