Weather event update
- January 22, 2026
Storm update from Mayor Jonathan Larsen
The Red Severe Weather Warning for Northland is now lifted. The worst of the storm has passed, and the forecast is westerly winds and showers for the next few days. Our thoughts go out to those in neighbouring districts who have been badly affected, and to those in our own district who have also sustained damage on their properties.
We were well prepared for this event. Even before the rain started our roading contractors had inspected culverts and drains to ensure water could drain freely. The Civil Defence team stood up early so they would be ready to respond if needed.
Our Civil Defence team is made up of Council staff who volunteer to help in emergencies. They are well trained and practiced so they can help keep the people in our district, and their property, safe. The team worked through the night to monitor what was happening and be ready to kick into action if required. I want to acknowledge how smoothly they managed this event and thank them for their efforts.
Although there was flooding in low lying areas, particularly in the east, we did not need to evacuate anyone or open the welfare centres that we had on standby.
Flood waters are now receding, and the team is monitoring the situation, particularly during high tide, which peaked in Dargaville at 3.30pm. Our hydrology report shows that the catchments that feed into the Wairoa River are slowing down, but we are keeping an eye on it as the water drains from the East and the hills.
There has been some damage to roads and we have teams on site already, working to get it sorted. Downers are doing a sweep of the district to check for further damage.
I want to thank everyone who worked with us to prepare for this event and to those who kept up to date and readied themselves and their property. This is all part of what makes Kaipara the place to be!
Mayor Jonathan Larsen
