Q. What are your rates used for?

Q. How do I receive my rates?A. Rates are sent by post or email.
Save yourself time and reduce waste, you can now choose to receive your rates notices (rates invoice and rates assessment notice) by email. If you register for this option, you will no longer receive your rates notices through the post, instead it will come straight to your email inbox. Registration link on right
Q. How do I change or update my address
Q. When are my rates due?A. The rating year is 1st July to 30th June and is divided into four equal instalments, each invoiced separately. Throughout the year, you will receive four rates invoices, one every three months.

Q. Can I pay my rates in full?
A. In accordance with section 55 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, which empowers councils to accept early payment of rates, Council will accept payment in full of all rates assessed in the current year on or before the due date for the first instalment of the year. Early payment of rates will attract neither a discount, nor interest on the sum paid.

Q. What is the penalty for unpaid rates?
Pursuant to sections 57 and 58 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, the Council delegates the authority to the Revenue Manager and the Revenue Operations Officer to apply the following penalties on unpaid rates:
a) A penalty of 10% of the rates assessed in the 2016/2017 financial year that are unpaid after the due date for each instalment will be added on the relevant penalty date for each instalment stated below, except where a ratepayer has entered into an arrangement by way of direct debit authority, or an automatic payment authority, and honours that arrangement. For each instalment the date the penalty will be added is as follows:

b) A penalty of 10% of the amount of all rates (including any penalties) from any previous financial years that are unpaid on 5 July 2016 will be added on 6 July 2016; and
c) A penalty of 10% of the amount of all rates to which a penalty has been added under (b) and which are unpaid on 5 January 2017 will be added on 6 January 2017.

Q. When is my water meter read?
A. Water meters are read and invoices sent on a six-monthly cycle. The amount payable is due on the 20th of the month following the month that the invoice was dated. Water meters are read and invoices for water used are sent to property owners every 6 months. The dates the meters are read will vary depending on your area. Q. What is the penalty for paying my water meter late?
A. Pursuant to section 57 and 58 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, the Council delegates the authority to the Council Revenue Team to apply the following penalties on unpaid rates:
A penalty of 10% of the amount outstanding for water-by-meter rates charged under section 19(2)(b) of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 will be added on the day after the due date.

A penalty of 10% of the amount outstanding for water‑by‑meter rates charged per invoice will be added on the relevant penalty date for each billing month and area stated below, except where a ratepayer has entered into an arrangement by way of direct debit authority, or an automatic payment authority, and honours that arrangement. Q. How can I get a final water meter reading?
A. If you are selling your property, a final water meter reading should be arranged between your solicitor and Council before settlement. There is a fee for this service, and you will also be billed for the water consumption up to the date of the final meter reading. Once the final water account has been processed, the water account will automatically be changed into the new owner’s name. Q. Can I request a special water meter reading?
A. Yes, You can request your water meter to be read at any time if required. There is a fee for this service, and an invoice will be sent to you. For more information please contact us, or to view our fee schedule on right or firstname.lastname@example.org or 0800 727 059.
