The Kaipara District Council has upgraded infrastructure such as Public Toilets in Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, and Kai Iwi Lakes along with funding a community project to rehabilitate the river bank at Kaiwaka and create a pedestrian underpass at State Highway One. The council supports promotion, media relations, international marketing and Famils (wholesaler’s visits) through Northland Inc. (previously Destination Northland) the regions tourism operator (RTO).
Some initiatives Kaipara District Council are involved with are:
-
Co-funded and organised the Kaiwaka Welcome Centre in conjunction with the Rugby World Cup which was successful in promoting the Kaipara and Northland’s Twin Coast Discovery Highway.
-
Supporting events such as the Rally of New Zealand, working with the community to host this event in 2013.
-
We are lobbying for Tracks and Kauri Cycleway development with New Zealand Cycle Trils and the Department of Conservation.
-
Supporting the Union of Ancient Trees initiative. We have developed good relations with the people of Yakashima, Japan and tourism operators involved. This has extended to a cultural exchange programme with Dargaville High School and participation in Japan Day in Auckland.
