Tourism in the Kaipara

The Kaipara District Council has recently upgraded infrastructure such as new Public Toilets in Mangawhai, Kaiwaka, and Kai Iwi Lakes along with funding a community project to rehabilitate the river bank at Kaiwaka and create a pedestrian underpass at State Highway One.  The council supports promotion, media relations, international marketing and Famils (wholesaler’s visits) through Destination Northland the regions tourism operator (RTO).

Some initiatives Kaipara District Council are involved with are:

  • In 2011 we co-funded and organised the Kaiwaka Welcome Centre in conjunction with the Rugby World Cup which was successful in promoting the Kaipara and Northland’s Twin Coast Discovery Highway.
  • Supporting events such as the Rally of New Zealand, working with the community to secure this event in 2012 which will benefit the town of Maungaturoto.
  • We are lobbying for Tracks and Kauri Cycleway development with Bike NZ and the Department of Conservation.
  • Supporting the Union of Ancient Trees initiative. We have developed good relations with the people of Yakashima, Japan and tourism operators involved.  This has extended to a cultural exchange programme with Dargaville High School and participation in Japan Day each year.
