Kaipara District Spatial Plan – Ngā Wawata 2050 - Our Aspirations

In early 2019 Council started work to develop a spatial plan for the District. The purpose and scope of this project was not just to inform the District Plan Review process, but to support all of Council’s strategic documents that guide our work. Combined, the District Plan, Long Term Plan and Infrastructure Strategy are our ‘top tier’ of strategic documents that influence our day to day projects and activities. The project took nearly two years to complete and was informed by multiple community engagement activities throughout its development process.

Planning for future

One of the key elements of Ngā Wawata 2050 is that it identifies how and where our communities might grow over the next 30 years, and this is important direction that the District Plan Review must consider.

Ngā Wawata 2050 was adopted in December 2020 and is not single document, but a suite of spatial plans that cover the District’s four key urban areas (Dargaville, Maungaturoto, Kaiwaka and Mangawhai) as well as the main 17 smaller settlements and villages that are critical community hubs for our predominantly rural District.
