The priorities identified by the community are described on the following pages. Order of importance is not reflected in the presentation of community priorities. It should also be noted that the need to categorise priorities do not fully acknowledge the inter-relationship of the economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects of the Kaipara District.

Kaipara district has a diversified and sustainable economy that supports the well-being of its communities and residents

Community Priorities

 

• Help youth in transition to work

• Provide new opportunities for the learning and development of skills linked to local industry demand

• Develop enterprise that adds value to local products, eg timber

• Promote events - support established events and attract new events, eg sports and cultural events

• Provide a ‘business friendly' environment, eg zoning for industry, internet access

• Ensure economic development complements environmental values.

• Investigate ways to utilise natural resources to develop sustainable economic activity e.g. harbour tourism, aquaculture, eco-tourism

• Support Maori economic development

• Support the strong existing agricultural industry

• Encourage competitiveness and diversity in the retail sector

• Promote Kaipara District's image nationally as a destination and lifestyle choice

• Improve the quality of the tourist experience

• Maintain and upgrade roading at a lower cost to the community

• Ensure all sections of the community have the opportunity to be heard and to participate

• Value and nurture the volunteer spirit and participation in community activities

• Support communities in taking control of the issues that affect their futures

• Overcome divisions and tensions within communities by building and enhancing relationships based on understanding and respect

• Increase Maori participation in decision making

• Enhance and maintain local public facilities (e.g. toilets, halls) to meet the needs of the community

• Develop more activities in arts, leisure and recreation

• Develop opportunities that enable young adults to remain in the district

• Value the role of schools in connecting community members

• Organisations and agencies should work together to provide better results and value for money

• Recognise and protect the heritage and icons that make the Kaipara District a unique and exceptional place to live

• Ensure public spaces, facilities, roads and footpaths are accessible and safe for all

• Ensure safe, clean drinking water and food sources

• Promote water safety

• Promote road safety

• Increase the profile and presence of police in the community

• Work to prevent violence, crime and vandalism

• Maintain a co-ordinated and effective emergency response

• Ensure access to health protection, promotion and education particularly for youth

• Improve collaboration between health care providers, ensuring that the needs of local people are identified and met

• Retain and improve access to services

• Maintain current accessibility to a high standard of local primary and secondary education

• Develop appealing places, spaces and activities for youth

• Recognise and support the contribution of community based clubs and services

Kaipara District is proud of and renowned for its beautiful environment and sound management of natural resources, where residents enjoy a clean, healthy environment

Community Priorities

• Increase awareness of how the natural environment works and how to get involved in caring for the environment

• Manage, protect and provide access to harbours, coasts, lakes and waterways

• Advocate and promote kaitiakitanga (guardianship) in the management of natural resources

• Protect native bush and make the most of existing reserves and wild, natural environment

• Recognise and manage sites of cultural and historical significance

• Develop walking tracks, particularly coastal tracks

• Reduce the amount of refuse in the environment including wrecked cars

• Introduce recycling

• Control pests and weeds that threaten native plants and animals

• Introduce means to stop soil erosion

• Ensure that farm and resident's effluent disposal systems are not creating pollution

• Ensure land development is in keeping with Kaipara District's character and that the ‘big picture' is recognised

• Ensure economic development complements environmental values
