Waste Management and Minimisation Plan

Waste Management and Minimisation Plan

The Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) is our plan for reducing waste to help make our district an even better place to live.

As required by the Waste Minimisation Act 2008, our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan has been developed to protect our district from harm and to provide environmental, social, economic and cultural benefits.

Our WMMP goals are to:

  1. To reduce the quantity of recoverable material entering landfill,
  2. To provide safe, environmentally sustainable and hygienic refuse collection and disposal,
  3. To reduce illegal dumping and associated negative environmental impact,
  4. To improve available information on waste generation, diversion and disposal,
  5. To avoid materials becoming waste, and
  6. To support combined local government and waste sector activities.

A key part to working towards this goal involves considering the role of waste in the wider economy, including issues of resource efficiency and viewing waste as a resource, rather than as an issue to be managed.

Kaipara District Council proposes to continue to provide a range of waste management and minimisation services similar to those currently in place. In addition, Council support the community to achieve further waste diversion through education and supporting local waste minimisation initiatives.

Waste Minimisation Fund

Assists with the minimisation or diversion of waste from landfills. A portion of the fund is available on an annual basis to provide support for local initiatives trialling or supporting new waste minimisation initiatives.
Council has an important role to encourage communities and businesses to reduce the amount of waste generated and disposed of and reduce the environmental harm waste can cause. This role is recognised and legally formalised in the Waste Minimisation Act 2008.

Council recognises that some of the best ideas and deliverers of waste minimisation projects come from our community. Kaipara District Council (KDC) administers the contestable Waste Minimisation Fund.

To apply for funding complete the application form (editable pdf) or download a word version and return to Council’s Waste Minimisation Leader. The maximum funding that can be applied for in one application is $5,000 (excl. GST).
There may be an opportunity to apply for larger amounts of funding however these opportunities are very limited.
