Walking Tracks

Anyone wanting to stretch their legs will find the Kaipara a great place to do so.  The Kaipara boasts an impressive variety of walks and tracks, ranging from gentle strolls to a chance to climb Northland’s second highest peak or look down on New Zealand’s longest drivable beach from the summit of the Maunganui Bluff.

This page includes a brief summary of some of the walks available.  This summary has been put together in collaboration with local tramping and walking groups, drawing on their local knowledge.  Many of the tracks listed are not formal walkways.  Kaipara District Council accepts no responsibility for any harm to people or property arising from use of the routes listed here.

Further information on walking tracks is also available on the Department of Conservation's website

For the sake of our iconic Kauri please be sure to follow instructions concerning staying on tracks or cleaning footwear to contain the spread of Kauri Dieback Disease.

This site categorises the District’s walking tracks by area to make it easier to locate tracks in your area.  The area categories are: Northern Tracks, North Central Tracks, Western Tracks, South Central Tracks, and Eastern Tracks. The map below broadly indicates to which areas of the District these categories refer.
