Kaipara Arts Awards 2011Kaipara Arts Award: “From The Tasman to the Pacific “The 2nd Annual Kaipara District Arts Award was held on the 17 November at the Kauri Museum, Matakohe. This event was very successful with 94 entrants received and exhibited and over 100 people attending the Awards night. The Awards were the culmination of efforts by the Mangawhai and Dargaville arts associations supported and co-ordinated by Kaipara District Council. The Kauri Museum provided a wonderful exhibition venue and assisted with the event. There were five different categories, which were Sculpture, Painting, Photography, other medium including Jewellery and Ceramics. The winner of each category received a $500 prize provided by one of the sponsors. The People’s Choice award was decided by exhibition visitors voting on the art piece they chose, 241votes were received. The winner “Donnelly’s Crossing” by David van Diepen was the clear winner by 36 votes. The judging panel included; Barry Gibbs – Senior Art Lecturer North Tech, Sarah Boon – Regional Arts Development Manager CHART and Chris Carey – Chief Executive CHART. The arts associations and Council thank the judges for their time and efforts in selecting category winners. On the night Barry Gibbs represented the judges and congratulated all the entrants, winners, organisers, and sponsors. The event was self funding with sponsorship support from businesses Brookfield’s lawyers, second year sponsor who doubled their sponsorship from last year, and new sponsors MPL Landscape Supplies, North, South Multimedia, Westmoreland Homes and Northland Waste. Sponsors presented the awards to the artists who won the categories. The Kaipara Lifestyler also contributed to the success of the event through editorial stories and advertising. Overall it was a great evening and all the winners and artists that took part in the event had a great time. This event will be an annual event for the artist in Kaipara.
