The Dargaville Girl Guides are claiming the world record for the longest ‘bra’ chain after stringing 169,324 pieces of underwear together at the Town’s Memorial Park, Saturday 18 February 2012.
The record-breaking goal achieved was to raise awareness for Breast Cancer. The previous record was set in Australia in 2009, with a chain of 166,625 bras.
With the help from many generous people and included donations from the United States, England and Australia this would have not been possible.
The Guides could not afford to bring a Guinness official to Dargaville, but the record would be authenticated by Mayor Neil Tiller and Northland MP Mike Sabin. Video and photographs would also be sent.
Mayor Neil Tiller said it had been a bra-illiant effort.
“I think it’s a fantastic effort and daunting task you know it took two days to spread out nearly 170,000 bras. It’s a fantastic effort from such a small community plus the help of a few guides from Auckland as well who came up here by bus.
Dargaville Girl Guides Leader Robyn Martinovich is working with aid agencies to send good-quality bras from the collection to Africa and the Pacific.
